Research Driving Simulators

The DriveSafety DS-600 Research Simulator is a fully integrated, immersive, full-cab, high-fidelity driving simulation system designed for use in ground vehicle research and training applications. The DS-250 is a partial cab, non-immersive, high-fidelity driving simulation system. The DS-100 is a desktop version used primarily as a driving scenario development platform. The simulators reduce the overhead associated with maintaining a dedicated programming or operations support staff.

The simulators are coupled with DriveSafety’s real-time driving simulation software (Vection) and a suite of advanced scenario authoring tools (HyperDrive) to provide the subject-matter experts an environment to create purpose-built driving scenarios and allow subjects to experience the virtual driving world. Researchers create their ideal driving laboratories by leveraging DriveSafety’s extensive library of roads, intersections, vehicles, traffic patterns and landscapes, plus the ability to script specific actions and to collect the desired data.

The DS-600 provides multi-channel audio/visual systems, 180°, 240°, 300° and 360° wraparound display options, full-width automobile cab (driver and passenger seats) based on a Ford Focus passenger car. It includes a full-size windshield, driver and passenger seats, force-feedback steering wheel, center console with gear select and emergency brake, full dash and instrumentation including headlights (normal/hi-beam), turn signals, vent fan control and stereo/CD. It also includes live acceleration and brake pedals, adjustable seat, seat belt, driver response buttons and powered subwoofer, stereo speakers and bass shakers for external driving sounds. The DS-600 also comes with a real-time motion simulation through DriveSafety’s Q-Motion™ platform. Optional six-degree of freedom motion platform is available.

The DS-250 cab provides a high-quality, authentic automotive control environment based on the driving cockpit of a Ford Focus. Standard driver controls and information systems include a live steering wheel with active force feedback, automatic transmission gear select, turn signals, analogue speedometer, gas and brake pedals, driver response input buttons, vent fan control and stereo/CD player. Tilt steering wheel and adjustable driver seat are standard, along with a functional seatbelt. The system includes digital audio simulation of the sounds of driving with a powered subwoofer, stereo speakers and bass shakers.

The DS-100 is used as more compact, desktop simulator or as a development environment for the DS-600. Many DS-600 owners use the single-channel DS-100 for their scenario development and testing so they do not need to power-on the multi-channel DS-600. The DS-100 is based on a LogiTech gaming wheel and pedal assembly. It is fitted with one-to-three LCD or plasma displays from 20 inches to 46 inches.
