Michelle Thiele thought she was a competent driver, but after being involved in two fatal accidents at the same intersection seven years apart, she now doesn't know.

Mrs Thiele yesterday told an inquest investigating the circumstances surrounding the crashes -- on a country road about 70km east of Adelaide -- she did not know whether she would drive again when her licence disqualification, imposed after the last crash, expired.

The inquest has heard the accidents happened after Mrs Thiele, 38, failed to give way at an intersection at Pompoota in April 2000 and June 2007.

John Mitchell, 69, died in the first accident when his vehicle was stuck by Mrs Thiele's car and Graham Bryant, 51, died when his motorbike ran into Mrs Thiele's car after she failed to give way.

She pleaded guilty to failing to give way for the first accident and aggravated driving without due care for the second accident.

The article is enlightening and hits close to home. I have experienced first hand the effects when drivers are either unaware of their surroundings or unsympathetic to others on the road. In my case I believe it was more of the former. My experience involved another vehicle and myself traveling along a major freeway. The other driver was texting or reading email on his phone while driving and nearly missed his exit while in the middle lane. In the last minute he realized he was about to miss is exit and swerved across my lane to get off nearly running me off the road. I don't believe he intentionally meant to run me off the road but rather was not aware of his surrounding because of the mobile device clutched firmly in his right hand.

It is troubling to almost die due to someone’s need to read an insignificant email or text but that is what happens all the time and is why Utah has placed a ban on the use of mobile devices while driving. I applauded the ban and have personally refrained from using mine while driving.
